Would you be here if you had one?

I recently attempted suicide, THIS IS NOT ABOUT THE ATTEMPT. I chose to do so by overdosing on Ibuprofen, 60,000 miligrams to be specific. I was discovered 7 or 8 hours afer the dose and rushed to the hospital where they ran a plethora of tests. In all the time I spent there they never once treated for the overdose, they sat me in a bed and watched as my body metabolized ALL of the ibuprofen. The next day they ran more tests and my blood work and all tests came back clean. The doctors told me th my body suffered no damage from the drug. I have read up on ibuprofen and I would be very curious to know how my body managed to metabolize ALL of that without any effect. I was naseous for a while and that was all. Any insight?

Dakota, Guardian of the Rich,

A friend of mine who's about a 120 pounds Took about 60000 mg found him 24 hours Later There is a bit of vomit and he was having seizures Aside from kidney damage Which was not fatal he Is just fine now

Bobbie, Gunner of the Unimaginable Terror,

I will have to refine my technique. Much to my chagrin, it seems my body is too resiliant when it comes to chemicals. Attempt #5 was between 30 and 50 grams of acetaminophen per dose administered 5 days in a row, for a total of between 90 and 150 grams. Although this has been a lesson in the grand diversity of chemical makeups in humans bodies it has also been a major pain in my butt. I'm glad this is anonymous because I would hate to be known as the guy who fails so well he couldn't even commit suicide. None the less, thanks for the info folks, I wish I had a stable location to submit from but homelessness is not conducive to that. If I post again I'll start an account somewhere to double post so that you can be sure it is the same person.

Addison, Patriarch of the Idealistic,

Typically toxicity tests are performed in the case of what's called an LD50: the Lethal Dose required to kill 50% of the sample population. When administered orally, dose is measured in milligrams per kilogram of body weight. 60,000 mg may be within a non-lethal range depending on your body weight and metabolism as toxic results typically only start to occur at doses exceeding 400 mg/kg. The NLM HSDB does cite an adult fatality at 105, 000 mg dosage, however this is ~42% higher than the dose you described.

For further information regarding the toxicity of ibuprofen, google "ibuprofen ld50 human" and select the entry for toxnet nlm nih gov (sorry can't post a URL here).

Interesting, I have also attempted suicide in the past, I used Amitriptyline, a tricyclic antidepressant, A notorious killer!! I tool 1.25 grams of it and served!! How I do not know 0.1 grams is normally fatal. Anyone any ideas??

Bobbie, Gunner of the Unimaginable Terror,

I am the original poster but this is being sent from a different location so I don't know if it will show up with the same icon. Amitriptyline is similar to Ibuprofen and most other drugs in that fatal amounts are x mg per kg of body weight, also there can be extenuating body chemistry issues. 60 grams of Ibuprofen is well beyond a fatal overdose for me but all it did was give me an upset stomach. I find a small amount of irony in the idea of using an antidepressant to commit suicide but no worse than me using a pain killer to acheive a painful death.

To the other reply I say, 31 is neither young nor old - sort of age limbo - but without the novel it would take to explain my reasons you are a bit short sighted on trying to talk me out of it.

Addison, Gunner of the Forgotten Lands,
Ibuprofin metabolizes through the kidneys. But there is nothing inherrantly fatal about Ibuprofin. Do yourself a favor and if you seriously want to die..don't try to do so with over the counter pills. That is an excercise in self torture. I firmly believe in a persons RIGHT to die..when there is a medical need, the right time and place. You sound young, and reasonably healthy. Not yet..give it some time. When you get a terminal illness you can go to a variety of clinics to get a coctail that will work and be painless and not nausiating. If you absolutely can't wait to get out of here talk to someone, please don't make yourself suffer.
